Imposter Syndrome, or knowing your worth?

Imposter Syndrome, or knowing your worth?

Overview

Recently, I was immensely honoured to be inducted into the Higher Ed AV Hall of Fame. For anyone who has dedicated their career to a field, such recognition is a profound moment. However, as Tim Albright noted in his article "Who Me?", such accolades can sometimes trigger a severe case of imposter syndrome, leading one to doubt their achievements or feel they just got lucky. But as I reflect on this significant milestone, I find myself not wrestling with self-doubt, but rather affirming the culmination of years of dedicated work and continuous growth.

Albright aptly describes imposter syndrome as the feeling of not deserving success, of attributing accomplishments to luck rather than merit. He outlines various manifestations, from the perfectionist who feels anything less than flawless is a failure, to the expert who believes they must know everything to be legitimate, or the soloist who fears asking for help. While these feelings are common and relatable, my journey, spanning over two decades in broadcast and audio-visual (AV) technology, tells a different story – one of earned expertise and deliberate progress, often forged in moments of challenging my own worth and that of others.

Early Career

Early in my career, working as a Sound Technician for an Irish National Radio station, I faced a situation that profoundly tested my resilience and professionalism. A colleague had broken his collarbone, and I was asked to cover his shift in addition to my own. This meant I worked over 18 consecutive days without a break.

While exhausted, I maintained my professionalism. Yet, during an advert break, a stand-in presenter unprofessionally challenged me in the control room, slating me for supposed "slip-ups" and declaring he didn't want me working the sound desk anymore before walking out.

Shaken by this surprise attack, at the end of my shift, I immediately requested a meeting with the Head of HR and the Sound Tech Manager. The meeting, however, never materialized. As a freelancer, I then made the decision to hand in my notice, much to their shock. When asked to reconsider, I unequivocally stated that nobody speaks to me in that tone and manner, and I left.

I have never regretted that decision, and I have since gone on to do bigger and better things. To this day, I still find myself laughing when I see or hear that egotistic sports presenter on TV and radio, knowing the bullying tactics he employs to get his way. This moment was a stark reminder that knowing your worth is not just about internal validation, but also about setting boundaries and valuing your professional dignity.

Setting up Xtreme Technology Solutions

I established Xtreme Technology Solutions (XTS) in 2005, then moved into IT Support and later became a Senior AV Specialist with PwC Ireland. Subsequent roles included Supervisor in Audio Visual Technology for UCD SNMHS and Senior Technical Officer for DCU SNPCH, culminating in my current position as EMEA Executive to HETMA. Each step has been a conscious effort to immerse myself deeper into the complexities of AV and technology.

Earning my Qualifications

This practical experience has always been complemented by a strong commitment to formal education and professional development. My academic journey includes a Higher National Diploma in Radio Production with distinction from Ballyfermot College of Further Education, where I was Deputy Marketing and Technical Manager for temporary radio stations.

I continued to earn a Bachelor of Arts in Media Production & Management with 2:1 honours from the University of West London, during which I established Scouting Radio as part of my thesis, which grew into a global, award-winning station.

I furthered my studies with a Masters Degree in Radio and Television Production from Maynooth University, also achieving a 2:1 honours degree, where I was the Technical Manager for KFM.

Additionally, I pursued an Advanced Diploma in Web Design from Dublin Business School with a distinction profile, covering client and server-side scripting and integration with web technologies.

Most recently, amidst the challenges of the Covid-19 pandemic in 2021, I upskilled by earning a Certified Project Management Diploma and the prestigious International Project Management Association (IPMA-D) level certification from Technological University Dublin, enhancing my skills in leadership and strategic planning.

Beyond University

Beyond formal qualifications, I’ve consistently sought industry-recognised certifications and awards. In March 2017, I achieved the AVIXA Certified Technology Specialist (CTS®) qualification, demonstrating proficiency in creating, operating, and servicing AV solutions, and managing AV activities to meet client needs effectively.

My dedication has been recognised through significant accolades: I was a finalist for European CTS® Holder of the Year in 2017 and AV Professional of the Year in 2018 at the AV Magazine AV Awards.

In 2018, I was also named AV Professional of the Year in the AV Nation Readers’ Choice Awards, a peer-voted recognition that highlights impact and influence within the community. The following year, in 2019, I was included in Commercial Integrators' esteemed "40 Under 40" list, which celebrates exceptional talent and leadership in the integration industry.

Additionally, I've extended my passion through initiatives like launching the "All Things TechIE Podcast" in 2018, which has gained over 5000 YouTube subscribers, and establishing AV GroupIE in 2021 to foster a supportive network for AV professionals across Ireland.

As an Audio Visual and Technology consultant, I offer comprehensive support throughout every stage of a project, from concept to completion, specializing in design, integration, installation, and ongoing tech support. My services also include media services, covering internet radio, live streaming, podcasting, and virtual webinar support, as well as end-to-end web design. I also create product review content, driven by my deep passion for technology.

I've worked with hundreds of different clients through my years in technology. I recall one client stating that my consultancy fees were too expensive. However, when you consider my over 20 years of work, continuous studies, and extensive qualifications, I firmly believe my fees are justified. As the saying goes, "Hire cheap, hire twice." My proven track record of successful projects, innovative solutions tailored to unique challenges, and ability to captivate audiences as a technology influencer and podcaster demonstrate the value I bring.

When I consider this extensive background—over 20 years of hands-on experience, multiple academic degrees, key industry certifications, and leadership in various professional initiatives—the notion of imposter syndrome simply doesn't hold weight. This induction into the Higher Ed AV Hall of Fame is not a stroke of luck; it is a direct consequence of sustained effort, continuous learning, and an unwavering commitment to excellence in the broadcast and AV sectors.

Tim Albright advises us to "Acknowledge the good" and "Accept the compliment, the award, the honour," reminding us that "You Deserve to Be Here". My induction is a testament to the belief that consistent dedication truly pays off.

It's about knowing your worth, understanding the value of your journey, and confidently accepting the recognition that reflects a lifetime of passion and hard work. For anyone feeling the creeping doubt of imposter syndrome, I urge you to look back at your own path, acknowledge every step you've taken, and own the expertise you've tirelessly built. You’ve earned it.
